“These are very powerful, very low-frequency noises, but they’re not a weapon,” says Mark R. Cohen, a professor of industrial engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
“It’s just a tool that’s used to generate the sound.”
The technology, which is called “tweedy vortex generators” or “tvega” after the type of vortex that it produces, can generate sounds that sound like a combination of the low- and high-frequency sounds that humans make, like wind or air.
“Tweedy” sounds are typically made from low-level vibrations.
But the new technology can generate more than just the sounds you hear in your home, which are often made up of the two low-pitched sounds, or “vibes,” that sound in the human ear.
Tweedy sounds can also be produced with a “tween” system, which uses a mixture of high and low frequencies to create sound, and a “reverb” system that uses low and high frequencies to amplify the low sounds.
The idea is that the high-pitch sound of the “vortex” is the sound that will be produced in the background, as you’re listening to your music or reading your newspaper.
“What you’re getting with this system is a very low frequency sound that is actually being transmitted by the generator into the atmosphere,” Cohen says.
“The low frequency noise is actually coming from the generator itself, not being transmitted through the environment.”
To make a tweedy sound, a generator is turned on, and the “tune” is turned off.
When the generator is powered on, it produces a low-resonant sound that’s sent through a small tube to a resonant generator that’s turned off, generating the “warp” sound.
The resonant “tweet” is what we hear when we listen to a speaker, while the low frequency “tucker” is used to make the “squeak” sound of a muffler.
“This system produces a very small amount of noise,” Cohen adds.
“When the generator’s off, you have no sound whatsoever.
So this is the first time that a resonator has been able to produce this type of low- or high-level noise.
It’s an extremely important new technique that will help us understand how sound can travel from the outside to the inside of a building, or from one part of the building to another.”
